Development of the Kayak
The kayak is one of the two common types of canoe used for recreation and sport.
It originated with the Inuit of Greenland and was later also used by Alaskan Inuit. It has a pointed bow and stern and no keel and is covered except for a cockpit in which the paddler or paddlers sit, facing forward and using a double-bladed paddle.
The kayak was commonly built for one occupant but could be designed for two or three. The Inuit built kayaks by stretching seal or other animal skins over a driftwood or whalebone frame and rubbing them with animal fat to waterproof the covering.
The paddler wore an overlapping shield to permit the kayak to be righted without shipping (i.e., taking on) water after rolling over. The kayak was used by Inuit for fishing and hunting.
The kayak’s shallow draft, narrow width, and quiet operation allowed Inuit hunters to explore tightly constricted waterways with great stealth, which helped them harvest more game.
There are many different types of kayaking, from white-water to sea and surf, which means there are always new adventures to try. But if you need more reasons to love kayaking, here are seven:
1. Kayaking Gives you an Excuse to Hit the Open Water
Open water is the name for any body of water that isn’t enclosed by land. You may have heard the term used to refer specifically to oceans and lakes, but there are also estuaries (which are connected to oceans or lakes), bays, sounds, coves and fjords.
Kayaking gives you an excuse to hit the open water and get out into these amazing places where you can see wildlife in their natural habitats!
There are so many great destinations out there, from Norwegian Fjords to Fijian Islands. Your imagination is your only limitation.
2. It’s a Great Social Activity
Kayaking is a great social activity. When you are going on a group trip you can meet new people and make friends.
You can also share your experiences with others who love to kayak. One thing that makes kayaking so fun is that it’s not just an individual sport; it’s a great way to spend time with other people while enjoying nature.
3. It’s a Workout for your Entire Upper Body and Core
You’ll get a full upper body workout with every stroke of your paddle. As you pull for each stroke, you use arm strength to pull the paddle through the water and leg and core strength to balance and control the movement.
You can burn large numbers of calories an hour while kayaking, depending on how hard you work.
You don’t have to be a gym lover or Olympic athlete to enjoy this type of exercise. It’s easy enough for people of all ages and fitness levels.
4. You can go on Solo Adventures
Kayaking is a great activity to practice alone. Whether you want to get away from it all, focus on your own goals or work out a problem, kayaking is the perfect way to do so.
5. It’s a Sport for all Ages and Abilities
Kayaking is one of the best sports to participate in for people of all ages and abilities. If you’re a beginner, a seasoned athlete or somewhere in between, kayaking can be an enjoyable way to get out and explore the world around you while staying active and in shape.
The great thing about kayaking is that it’s accessible to everyone regardless of their physical abilities.
6. There are many Different Types of Kayaking
In addition to the different types of kayaks, there are also many different types of kayaking.
There’s river kayaking, white-water, sea (flat) and surf, just to name a few.
These different types require different types of equipment and can vary in difficulty level from easy to extremely difficult.
If you’re looking for an activity that gets your heart pumping, then white-water kayaking might be for you.
If you’re looking for something relaxing but still adventurous or maybe even a little bit dangerous (depending on your definition), then sea or flat water kayaking may be more up your alley.
7. You see things from a Completely New Perspective
One of the things that makes kayaking so appealing is that it allows you to see things from a completely new perspective.
Kayaking is an excellent way to explore the world around us. It can be used for fun and relaxation, but also for research and exploration.
By doing this activity with someone else, you will be able to share this experience together and also have time to reflect on your surroundings as well as each other.
